"Repetitive Transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation in which a changing magnetic field is used to induce an electric current at a specific area of the brain through electromagnetic induction. An electric pulse generator, or stimulator, is connected to a magnetic coil connected to the scalp.
During an rTMS session for depression, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp of your head. This coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. It's thought to activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity during depression.
You also may hear the term "deep transcranial magnetic stimulation" or "deep TMS." The difference between rTMS and deep TMS has to do with the type of coil used. The deep TMS coil stimulates deeper and wider areas of the brain, compared with rTMS. Deep TMS coils have been FDA-approved for OCD and to stop smoking....."Mayo Clinic (n.d).
Studies have shown that efficacy and safety in rTMS treatment option for mental disorders such as major depressive disorders ( MDD) resistant to medication as well.
Introducing SOME-CY®
Historical background
Grounded in 5 theories and models of holistic interventions such as (1) Biopsychosocial model, (2) Maslow’s hierarchy of needs,
(3) Circle of Courage, (4) Trauma informed Care practice and CARE model, and (5)Indigenous Medicine Wheel, the Shema Outcome Measure & Evaluation (SOME®-CY) [‘some-see-why’] was created in order to help professionals and caregivers involved with children and youth in residential care, to holistically respond to young people’s needs. SOME®-CY encapsulates five domains of human functions including:
1. Medical and or health
2. Psychological aspects
3. Social Connections/Attachment
4. Economic/Financial
5. Culture/Identity/Spirituality.
Each domain comprises of two subdomains (“a &b”). Each subdomain’s minimum score or value is “0” point, whereas the maximum score for subdomain is set at “1” point. Thus, each domain’s maximum score value is 2, because a domain is comprised of two subdomains with maximum value score of “1 point” at a time.
Half-point (0.5) scoring rationale
SOME®-CY provides a wiggle room for professionals to warrant a “half-point” score in the event of a noticed small positive result that needs to be recorded on scale (“a” and or “b” subdomains), to reflect qualitative and or quantitative outcomes. (Example: The youth participated in a cultural youth summer camp for 2 hours). Thus, it wasn’t significantly meaningful probably, but it was something “worth mentioning”.
Final Score, Interpretation, and the Meaning
The maximum score is calculated in a straightforward fashion: 0-2 points per domain X 5 domains = ……. points/10 points.
Interpretation
Score between 0-4 points = Low (needing significant attention)
Score between 5-7 points = Moderate (needing some improvement)
Score between 8-10 points = High (youth’s needs have been met all domains).
SOME-CY tools suitability
Any professional in psychosocial interventions can use SOME-CY tools, such as:
